HI, I am trying to load 2529DC, but it is not loading. What does the "5 of 5" for the month mean, is there a limit of 5 maps loaded per month? Or is there a problem with 2529DC? Thanks

This is an excellent site, very helpful. Now teachers can download maps of their local areas, relevant and familiar to learners. Thank you for it. Rejoyce

Maps in the Williston area do not upload. What is the reason for "Maps accessed this month: 5 of 5" (that even include maps one cannot open), if that is some limit, it really degrades the usefulness of this site. This site can be a very useful tool.....but you have to fix it and allow
real access.

Thank you zmdanda, your feedback will help solve a problem I’ve been struggling with since the map service started.

I noticed that some of the maps failed to upload to the website. I tried to check for missing maps, but it is very hard since there are more than 1600 maps and the missing ones are randomly distributed though the lot.

I have been replacing missing maps on suggestion of site users randomly coming across holes in the data. Hopefully in time this problem will be solved with the help of the users.

Hi
Would it be possible to add a conversion of areas (eg Morgen to Hectares) and distances (Cape Feet to Metres).
Thanks

Is it possible to add the colour aerial photos that is base on the 1:10 000 ortho maps to your data base?
Make the access to it the same as way to access the Topographic maps.
Thanks

Dear ptpienaar

I sounds like the coordinate system on the SG Diagram is different from the (latest) WGS84 system. As the site stipulates, the (Y, X) coordinates need to be the Gauss Conform Mapping coordinates corresponding to the WGS84 Ellipsoid model of the earth. Attention also have to be paid to the Longitude of Origin when the mapping coordinates are converted to geographic (Lat, Lon) coordinates (i.e. 19° for WG19, 21° for WG21, and so on…).

If these calculations are needed for legal purposes like selling / subdivision of land, boundary dispute, etc. it might be best to consult a Land Surveyor to do the calculations, possibly even re-locate and/or place the beacons and certify the work for legal purposes and/or to avoid future disputes.

Let me know if there are any further queries and also if I can refer you to a Land Surveyor in your local area…

I am a valuer. I converted the points as found on the SG Diagram with your "plane (X,Y) to Geographic" calculator and marked them on Google Earth in order to identify the farm I must value. Since I know where the borders of this spesific farm run I noticed that the coordinates are totally wrong - the shape of the plotted coordinates on Google Earth correspond with the shape of the SG Diagram, but the two do not seem to allign. Can you please comment.

That is one of the initial ideas for the site, but resources are currently a bit tied up. Im also working on a graphical service that will enable you to easily search for and download any one of the 1600 1:50000 maps of South Africa.

Im busy studying my fourth (and last) year for my BSc (Geomatics) Degree at UCT and is currently very busy with a Geodesy related Thesis. Once I graduate, I should have a little more spare time to develop this service

Thanks for the great service

Would it not be possible for land surveyors to enter their station (working point) coordinates into a permanent data base so that eventually your site could act as a regional (National) data bank and one could search for TSM,s TRIGS and Working Points of other Surveyors when going into an area

The Point Search database contains both WGS84 and Clarke1880 control points. You can search for either Trigs or Town Survey Marks by using the name, number or co-ordinate of the control point.

What is nice about the co-ordinate search is that you can specify a rough co-ordinate (obtained from a rough resection, hand held GPS or Google Earth) and a tolerance distance from the rough point. This will return all control points within that distance from the rough point.

As for Clarke to WGS84 co-ordinate conversion you have to be more specific. Conversions between state control points are not necessary as everything is listed on this site. A Helmert Transformation is best for converting other co-ordinates using the closest surrounding control that is available in both systems. This feature is not yet available on this website but will be available in the future.

Let me know if you have any further queries...

Hi

Just been itroduced to your site by Surveys and Mapping
A great idea

Typically I set upi in (say) hout bay do a resection with unknown trig
Then need to identify the trig and calc the resection
Then fix my position if WGS but original diagram is in Lo 19 Clarke

Can your web site help me with
1. ID of Trig
2. Convesion from Clarke to WGS

The problem is that the Website unfortunately costs money to run and I have to at least cover some of the costs.

I support your suggestion and this is why I made the service so in-expensive and give it away for FREE to students and Educational Institutions.

Also, with enough support from users I can make more time to further develop the Website.

Hi Pieter,

I suggest that you make this site freely available until you have enough functionality to attract more users. The regular free users will then be more than willing to pay for your services.

Keep up the good work.

Peter Hunt
