Spatial Reference - Topographic Maps in South Africa
This service provides access to about 1600 topographic maps covering most of South Africa. These maps are electronic copies of the 1:50000 scale topographic maps provided by the Chief Directorate : Surveys and Mapping. Detail such as road networks, contours and spot heights, trig beacons, land use definition (residential, nature reserves, plantations, industrial), farm boundaries, some services, dams and rivers are available on the maps making it useful for surveyors, town planners, engineers, navigation, flight planning, geography, etc...
The maps have been converted to .JPEG format since this compressed format is more efficient to download and it can be viewed in many common programs.
Grid Selection:
The map below shows an outline of South Africa with respect to the position lines of latitude and longitude. Each grid reference contains a maximum of 16 maps labelled in a specific manner. Upon selecting the appropriate grid reference from the main map (below) thumbnails of available maps for that grid reference will be displayed in the area below the main map. A specific map can then be selected for view / download from there.

Map Selection:
After selecting the appropriate grid reference, thumbnails of the available maps for that area are presented below. Selection of a specific map opens a new window which will load the complete map for view / download. The maps contain high quality detail and are sizes of about 3400 x 3400 pixels (1MB to 3MB per map). On a broadband connection it should not take more than a minute to download / open a map.
